Well, others will disagree, I suppose, but I'm a great fan of Firebird.
Firebird is an open source fork of IB 6. Firebird has an embedded
version, and with that you get a single user database, without
installing servers or other stuff. The only thing you need is a DLL in
the same directory as your application. If (in the future) you want to
switch to a full featured server, you just replace this DLL with the
normal Firebird client, and a server somewhere in the network (could be
your local machine, though).
