There are 2 main methods: SMTP and MAPI.

SMTP requires access to a SMTP server, username, password etc.

MAPI will use the default mail client, which may not be so smart on a
server. Sent e-mail can be seen in the "sent"-box afterwards.

I use SMTP + Indy in a setup similar to yours: Looping through a customer
database.
