Great - thanks for posting your decision!
Hopefully I didn't just talk you over. If you want
to go the freeware route, here's a library which
might be usable:

This one uses a hooking method (IAT patching) which
is not the best available, but it should be halfway
stable. Didn't test it myself, though.
P.S: I just reread what you wrote in the beginning:

madCodeHook normally doesn't come with sources
even in the (normal) commercial edition. If your
final decision is to use madCodeHook and if you
absolutely *must* have the sources, please contact
