Both FireBird and NexusDB are good.

Certainly for embedded apps, I find NexusDB more convenient. It actually
embeds the embedded server in the .exe, there are no additional dll's.

Also it is very easy to programatically switch between embedded and c/s
modes in NexusDB.

But I'd suggest try them both, do some tests, and make your decisions.
