load testing solution sought

We have a Delphi 7 client talking to a Delphi 7 Application server using
MIDAS.DLL
We use socketserver connection method.
A client wants to know the hardware to use for 800 simultaneous users, so we
recruited a company to do the loadtesting.

They dont have 800 spare computers to replay a script of mouse-clicks e.t.c
at once !
Instead they have some software called loadrunner.

Plan was for them to record the traffic between the client and AppServer.
Edit it as needed and then replay lots of times to simulate lots of users.
Unsurpirsingly ( to me ) they are having problems and it doesnt seem to
work. Its also not easy apparently to understand the undocumented MIDAS
communication.

Can anyone suggest a good solution ?
