I am up for a change (not from VSSConexion), but with MS.VSS, so
please report back your findings.

As a former VSS user, I can suggest Perforce (http://www.perforce.com).

It is not really similar to VSS, but certainly more stable and is
accepted as an industrial strength solution. I don't think even MS
uses VSS internally. What does that say?

IDE integration is possible via SourceConneXion

Perforce is a great product and free for 2 users. After 2 users, it is
on the pricier side of the market.
