The menu item has check mark when the current project options is *exactly*
the same that the the configuration holds.

Along those lines: Sometimes in the "Manage Configurations" dialog under
"Project" there is an asterisk (*) to the right of a project
configuration - what does that mean?

This is the same logic that is used for the menu item. If it is not an
*exact* copy of the configuration it is marked with an asterix symbol.
