Algorithm to optimize shape cuts on a sheet...

Hello group,

I am looking for an algorithm or library to optimize the cutting of pieces of wood on a sheet.
- Need to work with polygons (not only rectangles)
- Solid arcs and circles not necessery
- Optimization should be on the length of sheet needed to cut all elements, provided that width is fix
- Constraints: Wood fiber direction
- any link to an algo, or freeware or commercial library with source welcome
