I need to write a system for optimizing the loading of a truck

Since the number of possibilities probably is too large to get the best solution in a reasonable time with brute force, I think a genetic algorithm might be able to solve this. The key (or one of the keys) is to define a fitness function, which favors solutions which are distributed evenly etc.
