Hi Pete,
It's a shame that the US don't know how to spell the metric units defined in Europe.
Just to set it straight: I'm an American about as much as you're a Martian. ;-)
How did you come to that conclusion, if I may ask? I'm from the Czech Republic (a relatively small, but very nice, country located at the heart of the Europe).
Metres is the unit not Meters (which is an instrument with a dial)
Oh well :(
I've checked it up with my dictionary and it mentions both "metre" and "meter" as units of a distance, the latter being commonly used in US English.
I have to admit that I tend to use both the general English and the US English expressions interchangeably in my speech/written word. I'm not a native English speaker and I realize my English is nowhere near perfect, but I do keep improving.
