Definitely it does play for you and others who read the group, but how much people actually do this? I remember the discussion some time ago, that the number was below 200 writers and I assume not much more readers (because over time most of the readers write anything and become counted as writers). For general-purpose components or the components which exist only on Delphi market this number is important, of course. For specialized solutions (like our driver-based products) these <500 people are at most 2 sales over time, and that's for products that don't have competition.

I'd say it in other way - if there were no newsgroup, you would probably use google and check the number of downloads on component sites (like Torry or DelphiPages). Ie. you would use the other channels and most likely come to the same conclusions regarding the components to choose.
