I don't think there is anything wrong with using that product (or other similar products) as a measure for managing copyright licenses and keeping honest users honest. Feel free to use them to protect your intellectual property *from* the user, but I strongly advice using them as a measure for protecting the data *of* the user, unless the product was specifically designed and thoroughly analyzed for that precise purpose.

I can think of a couple of question one might have to ask:
* Is the license key stored anywhere on the computer or is it always entered at run time?
* Is there more than one user with a valid license key, and is it even remotely possible that these users in some case have to protect any data from each other?
