Do others agree with this? That we should expect to pay for the Unicode-VCL
port (or have a subscription active to get it)?
I think it's a bit early still to more or less put a price on such an upgrade.
For us it will come down to how much effort it will take to make the whole
code base full vcl unicode capable AND STABLE. There's likely a lot of
pitfalls when going unicode so judging time right now is practically
impossible.
Should the changes be major then I'd assume that some vendors will take that
"break in functionality" as an opportunity to restructure/rearchtiecture their
products and that might lead to a new major version.
Now regarding subscriptions: some are bound one product line, some even to a
major version, in short there's a lot of flavours of them.
I would also like to mention that the a good part (probably the majority) of
end-user applications out there do NOT need unicode, so I personally think
that a lot of developers do not need to upgrade to keep their products
actively supported.
Just my few cents on that.
