Forgot to mention: it should a small footprint also.
I need to write a self-extracting installer for a specific application.
the resulting exe should be as small as possible.

That depends on the things you want to compress ;)

But I suggest you take a look at 7zip (there is also a
delphi interface for the dll) which outperforms winzip and co.

For pictures you could eventually use jpeg2000.
