Re: Program that tells file name from sector number?

1. are u using WinXP? ussually doing some repair installation would help
-> Boot from XP installation CD
-> Press Enter when you asked to install (don't choose to press "R" since it bring Recovery Console)
-> Don't do fresh install it, but repair your exciting installation by pressing "R" on selected partition that contain OS
-> Just relax till repair finish (windows will ask some questions)

2. if solution 1 didn't help
use recovery console on installation disk and type chkdsk /f

3. solution 1 & 2 didn't work
if that really a bad sectors (physical), use your working pc, use that HDD as slave and backup as much as possible the data using Windows (boot into working windows environment) then you can try to reformat (and reinstall windows) or even repartition (use FDISK or other tool)

hope that help

Hello all,

my sister in law asked me to fix her DELL Latitude D600 notebook
because it threw bluescreens during the boot process. I suspected
a bad sector on the drive and tried to backup the drive contents
first using Acronis Trueimage. Indeed, Acronis told me the drive
had a bad sector but it wouldn't tell me which file occupies that
sector.

I know the sector number, but how am I going to find out which file to
replace after restoring the backup on a new drive? If I know the
file name, I can probably pull it from another PC.

BTW, the notebook's drive (a Toshiba 75 gb) was too hot to touch.
Never a good sign.
