Never a good sign.
Therefore, I'd suggest you next go out and buy a new laptop HD, and do a fresh install on that. Given bad sectors and overheating, the current HD is likely dying.
Does the Dell's fans still run ?
I backed up the notebook's hdd on a network server using the Acronis
bootable cd and replaced the hdd with a spare one I still had lying
around. The bad sector was reported near the end of the backup
so I guess it's probably not one of the Windows operating system files.
Anyway, after swapping the hdd and restoring the backup, Windows XP
booted flawlessly. I checked the event logs which indeed reported
bad sectors on the old hdd. But so far I haven't got a clue which
(if any) file is broken. My sister in law is happy again!
