performance problems and focus issues (wierd behavior)

hi all
i have an interactive service that recieves many messages every second, and
updates data in a TPanel control upon every message. I have noticed a
strange behavior: sometimes the update rate gets very slow.

in the main form of the interactive service i have a popup-menu which
appears when i press a button, and a little 'about' form that is activated
by a ShowModal command. When i activate one of these two, the update speed
of the TPanel component is increased dramaticly. When i close the about
form, or close the popup menu - the speed immidiatly decreases back to what
it was.

It seems like a control focus issue, but i honestly can't understand what
causes the problem, or how to solve it. or - why the hell it happens
randomly (sometimes it does, most times it doesnt).

i know for fact that it is not my messaging mechanizm that causes the
problem.
