keeping CPU cool

I have a program that does a lengthy calculation. I want to run
multiple scenarios so I have programmed it to set ist priority at
idle. I want it to run on machines that are used for other functions
and not interfere with those other functions.

The two fastest machines I have access to: a Dell 2.66 GHz Pentium and
an IBM 3.2 GHz Pentium both have a problem in that when I run the
program their cooling fans spool up and make a lot of noise. The IBM
fires up immediately so I assume that it is monitoring the CPU's power
consumption in some way and the Dell spools up over a short period of
time so I assume that it is measuring termperature.

Is there some way I can get my program to slow down enough to avoid
heating the CPU to the point where the fans come on without
interfering with the functioning of other programs. (For example, the
IBM fan fires up any time you do a print job and will sometimes come
on briefly while surfing the web.)
