Actually, it's more of a mistake in Fortran. It's a positively
prehistoric programming language, which isn't bad in itself (it
was pretty much the first _ever_ step up from assembly), but it
shows in things like this: allowing the most horrible things in
the interest of saving **!!one character!!** of source code.
