You know, I just re-read your reply, and I realize that I
misunderstood.

Are you suggesting that the admin edit a file/table indicating what the
paths are? And then my program can just look at that to figure out
where to read and write?

That would work. I wonder if there's a better way, though, because it's
not good to require human intervention if you can avoid it.
