Also, if someone has any information about any of the Delphi database
components and technologies, please could they fill me in on this
thread - such as what they are about, whether the are useful / used
much, recommendations or anything else that comes to mind about them.

I'm talking about things such as: ADO, dbExpress, BDE, InterBase and
any others than come to mind that I have missed. There seems to be so
many of them. Also, any recommendations on other useful database third
party components would be beneficial.
