Thanks, Maarten and others for your thoughtful responses. I should have
probably mentioned in my initial post that I came here *from* the oodesign
group :) I've been reading it for years, and have learned much from it, but
they talk in abstractions and often I find trouble grounding those
abstractions in code. It sometimes feels like the game I'm watching in
oodesign is not the game I'm playing - maybe that's indeed the case!

I'm somewhat heartened by the advise in this thread to choose the simpler
way.
