OT: keyboard/cursor/caret problem

Sorry to bother you with this off topic subject but I've run out of ideas.

Ever since I installed Vista on a laptop I have a weird keyboard behaviour.
When typing in text, the caret will sometimes jump to the position of the
cursor and text entry then continues there.
It happens in Delphi, but also in Wordpad and Word.
I can find no systematic. It seems to happen more often after some keys than
after others, but there is no clear pattern.
I've installed the latest drivers for the computer. Unfortunately I
installed an OEM version of Vista. Can get no support from MS or Dell. Since
it is a laptop I can not change the keyboard.

Anybody any suggestions ? If not a solution, then maybe an explanation for
this behaviour.
