The toolboxes I mentioned above. They don't work in Octave. I've got
Octave installed, but almost nobody here uses it because every time
they turn around, they are using one of the toolboxes instead of just
plain Matlab. Yes, I've tried pushing people in that direction,
but with very little luck. Best I can tell, we (well, not me, but
plenty of people where I work) have sold our soul to Mathworks
(the part that's left over after MS, that is). They own us, they
know it, and they take advantage. More details on that would be
off topic here and probably inappropriate for other reaons as well.
But I do take my experiences with them as reinforcement of lessons
I knew long ago...lessons that I'm afraid some people here are going
to relearn the hard way. Those lessons have to do with the benefits
of standard, portable languages like Fortran...or even C...but at
least something not controlled by a single company.
