I run a courses in Resource Modelling and Numerical Analytical Methods in
the Science Faculty at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. I am
wanting to purchase a good FORTRAN compiler that can be run on a LAN for
about 10 students. I would greatly appreciate comment on two issues.
Firstly, are the comments that I receive from colleagues about Fortran being
an archaic language only used by a few zealots justified, or would I be
doing Science students a favour by teaching them Fortran in preference to
other languages, and second, which compiler should I buy, for which
platform. Currently most of our programming is windows based in Visual
Basic. Thanks for any help.
