Keep in mind that a lot of people using Linux systems cannot use rpms to install stuff.
Not everyone has root (or some level of sudo) access to do those sorts of things. And I'll
wager that the number of people who do have that access is going to continue to decrease.

For those cases compilable sources (or precompiled libraries/binaries) are the go.
