Right. It is a DEC extension. It was in the
PDP-11 compiler and was added to the VAX-11
compiler for backward compatibility. The worst
part is it was not restricted to DATA statements. DEC Fortran accepted
statements like
I = J + "177
It makes lexical analysis interesting.
