Announcing Intel Fortran Compilers 9.0

I know that this is "old news" to many of you, but I was on vacation earlier
this week and was not able to post this before.

Intel Visual Fortran Compiler 9.0 for Windows and Intel Fortran Compiler 9.0
for Linux have now been released. New features include:

* More features from Fortran 2003, including command line and system
environment intrinsics
* The ability to INQUIRE about directories
* Full support for OpenMP 2.5, including WORKSHARE, enabling development
of applications for multicore processors
* Multi-file routine interface checking (this is really cool...)
* Run-time detection of uninitialized variables (Windows-only for now -
see Release Notes for additional details.)
* Improved optimization at the default level (-O2)
* Loops can now be both vectorized and parallelized
* Software-based Speculative Precomputation optimization helps with
shared-cache processors
* Improved debugger support for optimized code
* IMSL Fortran Library (Professional Edition for Windows only) now
supports Intel EM64T
* Ability to view PARAMETER constants in the debugger (not working in the
initial release - will be available in the first update later in June.)
* Improved installation and license acquisition process
* Ability to run versions 9.0 and 8.1 side-by-side (compiler version
selection tool in Visual Studio IDE)
* 64-bit compiler for Intel EM64T is now included (yeah, I know that makes
it even bigger - we're evaluating ways to deal with that), and explicit
support for AMD Opteron is now claimed

In collaboration with HP, which recently announced that they would discontinue
sales of CVF as of December 31, 2005, we have brought back the special CVF
Migration pricing for Intel Visual Fortran, and expanded it to include
floating licenses. For more information, including a comparison chart, see our
Upgrade from CVF page at
http://www.intel.com/software/products/compilers/upgrade_to_ivf.htm

We also opened a "CVF Migration Center" section of our user forum to help
users make the transition.

For more information on what is new in 9.0, see the Release Notes and the
Product Information pages
(http://www.intel.com/software/products/compilers/fwin/ and
http://www.intel.com/software/products/compilers/flin/)

I read through some of the posts regarding our 9.0 release and can comment on
a couple of the questions. If you have further questions, you can reply here
or post in our user forum - I'll do the best I can.

Q: What, other than the command argument and environment variable intrinsics,
are new from F2003?
A: Nothing major. Someone asked about TR15581, but that's not new for us. We
already support many things from F2003 (for example, VOLATILE), but I know it
would be helpful for me to come up with a list. I'll do that and post it in
our user forum. We're doing our planning now for what comes next from F2003,
based in large part on comments we've received from customers as to what is
important to them.

Q: Why is the non-commercial version not available yet?
A: Who said "marketing"? I will comment that there has been increasing
pressure to discontinue the non-commercial offering, partly due to the
extensive abuse of it by companies and funded departments of educational
institutions. The compromise for now is the stronger wording to discourage
"casual" abuse.

Q: Is this the first version based on CVF?
A: No. Version 8.0 was. I'm uncertain what implied otherwise.
