Just trying to be amusing,
I accept that it IS a case of asking for additional processing to return a
index..
However, beyond the EASY processing of unknown items from a file record
advantage,
(compare with the multitude of statements everyone is using now to process a
file record)
the valid index would allow the exact error item to be reported and even
allow resuming string processing in the error handler.
