Reading from and writing to tape became too complicated to support
without greater user demand. When all we had to support were open
reel tapes, we could manage. QIC tapes were a bother, but we could
manage. With DAT tapes, DLTs, etc., we gave up. Add to the mix the
differences between SCSI, ATAPI, and SATA controllers, and it is
pretty much hopeless.
We now recommend that users stage tapes to disk using the dd
command , run their programs and, if need be, write them back
using dd again.
If you must use a tape drive directly, please check the manpages
for st and mtio.
