the preferences set to use spaces (not tab characters), I don't remember
the editor being /that/ bad to work with. (I prefer emacs for free-form
work, but I don't remember if its fixed form mode works as well.)

Yes it does. If you click on the pull-down menu 'View' and then click
on 'Properties', you will be able to choose between fixed and free form
and some other formats. I assume you use Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6.
Other versions might have different configuration. Not sure about it.
