What system are you using that does allow it?
When this issue first came up, we were using various versions of
SunOS, Solaris, AIX, and Concentrix. I just tried it with gfortran
and MacOSX, and the rewind works alright (i.e. doesn't crash) with
terminal input and with redirection of stdin, but it fails with a
pipe.
