I appreciate all the abolve replies. It has been pretty helpful. My
current situation is that I am in a university and therefore I can
purchase the software as part of my start-up package at academic
price. Therefore I would ask for some advice about the programming
software I may want to have. I know that there are some free and
popular programming languages on the market and I plan to learn but
haven't really done it. I think I have a question which seems out of
scope of this forum but would try to ask. For some people use C++, do
I need to purchase the C++ compiler from Intel or it is included in
the MS Visual Studio 2005 professional?

That's a pretty broad request for advice. What software you may find useful depends on what you want to do, or where you're going to be working (I'm assuming it's not in a CS dept since you're asking about Fortran :o). Rather than use Fortran or C or C++ you might find something like IDL or matlab more useful in a university/research type of situation. Or Mathematica? If everyone else in your dept is using matlab (say) and you code everything in C++, you might stifle creative cross-fertilisation of ideas or applications.

In any case, the best way (IMO) for you to figure this out is to obtain evaluation copies of the packages in question and use them, test them, wear them out.
