I had to do that once with Josef Meiron's optical design program at
Aerojet Electro Systems.

If there is a user's manual see if it can be used while looking at the
code to get a rough road map.

Then you will probably need to reverse engineer a logic flow chart
while making a list of the variables used and what they seem to do.

Depending on how big the code is, it could be a lot of work as it is a
lot like getting inside the original programmer(s) mind.
