I'm not trolling and if I was you gave me exactly what I wanted. I've
done some searching and found mostly conflicting and out of date
information. Then I thought to myself why not see if there is a
Usenet group and ask questions there. Isn't sharing information part
of the purpose of Usenet. Since I have never had any experience or
exposer to Fortran at all I'm sorry if my questions are dumb. All the
engineers, scientists, etc. that I know who would possibly ever use
Fortran use C.
Then you should have stated that you found conflicting info of
the net. Your orginal post quote here:
What makes Fortran such a great language for number crunching say
compared to C or Lisp? My other question is what is the best compiler
for Fortran?
has a loaded first question that leads to religious wars.
Your 2nd question lacks any details. gfortran is the best available
Fortran compiler for the operating system that I use. gfortran is
probably not the best choice for Windows XP, but you haven't defined
what 'best' means. On XP, I'd check out Intel, Lahey, and Absoft
among others. On a Cray or Sun system, I'd look at the vendor's
compiler.
Part of asking questions of Usenet it to provide some detail.
Well the only way that the first question would lead to a religious
war is because of ass holes like you.
You can't be this completely clueless, can you?
Search the comp.lang.fortran archive. You'll find that this
question comes up every few months and always lead religious
wars on why language A is better than language B.

I just wanted to see peoples general opinion and then get that OS
that I need since I have access to all.
You have access to a CDC 6600?
I meant any current OS that runs on a microcomputer.
That's not what you wrote, and the detail that I requested.
Things like Unix, Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, DOS.
Use your brain.
et tu
I didn't figure I had be that specific.
Why not? I helps narrow down the answers. Now that we know you
have a microcomputer (hopefully, you don't mean micro vax), one
can forego the discussion of Cray, Sun, IBM RS6000, et al hardware
and compilers.
How many people hear are talking about a CDC 6600.
Actually, discussions of old hardware and compilers come up
all time because people are porting old code to microcomputers.
You run into fun things like odd floating point formats,
ones compliment integer, etc.
I could search the archives but I don't have the time nor do I
want to. Besides, its not my problem that my questioning might upset
someone. Thats like saying don't ask whether AMD or Intel is better
or whether Windows or Mac is better.
Well, I'd say don't ask such ambiguous and pointless questions. You
can google and find thousands of opinion about whether AMD is better
than Intel.
There are going to be fan boys out there who get upset and start
a flame war.
Bingo. "Use your brain" before asking pointless questions.
The problem is if you don't know anything about them you have to
ask the questions.
Only if you're too lazy to investigate the issue.
To end your misery, install FreeBSD (http://www.freebsd.org/)
on your microcomputer (if it's a micro vax try NetBSD) and
then install gfortran. You now have the best OS and best Fortran
compiler.
