Is this a hypothetical "make" capable of recognizing multiprocessor hardware and acting accordingly, or does such a thing exist now, or am I totally confused? What tool actually does the parallelizing?
I have heard of parallel (or distributed) make for many years,
though I have never tried using it. (It can be done on networked
systems of machines accessing files through a file server.)
Google for "parallel make" (in quotes) and you get over 69000 hits.
