I first knew it in the OS/360 Fortran compilers.
It is a letter, allowed anywhere in variable names,
which comes after Z. Default is REAL*4. I have
seen:

IMPLICIT REAL*8 (A-H,O-$)

PL/I allows @, #, and $ as alphabetic characters.
