What do I expect? OK, since you asked. I expect documentation that is

We do not offer phone support - as others have said, phone support is very unsuitable to the sort of problems you are having. We do offer free, direct support as well as a very active user forum. For details please visit http://software.intel.com/sites/support/

When I follow the documentation the best I can and run a knownn good
Fortran program in Visual Studio 2008 and it comes back with many
errors. gfortran does not generate these errors. Instead, I get an
exe file. So I'm probably doing something wrong.

If you had approached it the way you did with gfortran, which is undoubtedly from the command line, you would probably do just as well with Intel Fortran. Maybe you would be more comfortable with the command line. To get to the command line interface, select Start > All Programs > Intel Software Development Tools > Intel Visual Fortran Compiler Professional 11.1.xxx > Fortran Build Environment For Applications Running On IA-32. The command to compile and link a single file or multiple files on the same line is "ifort".

Documentation is also provided - you will find a Documentation link in the above menu.

So Steve, let's stick to the problem at hand. I'm having trouble
getting my Intel compiler up and running in general, and hopefully the
postings on the Forum will help me do that.
The responsibility of solving those startup problems with the Intel
compiler sits with Intel, and not with the membershipo here.

You're getting the help you ask for. I suggest that for now you keep this in the user forum, where you're getting the most direct assistance.
