    If you have your heart set on using wireless, check out Chipcon's lineup of
    Zigbee-compatible chips. These are 802.15.4 compliant with the MAC and
    baseband layers built in. It is a 2.4 GHz DSSS radio and the range should be
    adequate for your needs. However the problem you will run into is that you
    will have to design your own proprietary software to do the wireless sensor
    network router hops. This is because the Zigbee networking specification has
    not been released yet. I think this is the best radio implementation for
    your application.
    There are also some 433 MHz radios out on the market, but they have no
    security. Anybody with a receiver can intercept the messages and then play
    them back through a transmitter to bypass the alarm system.
