_Analog_ camcorders? I know DV bitstreams have a timecode embedded,
but I wasn't aware there were any standards for doing similar magic on
analog (well, except for SMPTE of course).

I really only have access to the audio in this application - hacking
into the video signal path is just way beyond my capabilities (and
also it's too much work to do over again for a different camcorder).
