Thanks everybody. Very informative!
I'll go with the Velleman K8048 (and PIC16F627). It's a kit, so I can
probably find some ZIF sockets to avoid the bent pin problem.
Compilerwise, I'm used to command-line tools (linux all the way, heh).
So, SDCC, PiKdev to drive the programmer, YaPIDE as graphical simulator
- all freebies. Gotta love Open Source :-)
