Whilst remembering that the vast majority of embedded systems do not
have an OS.

VERY FEW 8 and 16 bit systems run an RTOS. They are more common on
32bit systems.

Well it would if there was not an OS in the way.

Start with a simple PIC, 8051, Z80 or AVR dev kit and an eval
commercial compiler and play with the HW registers.
