Discredited by their attempts to get everything to a level a six
year old could understand, and to hell with accurately conveying
your message. I have a former employer here in the UK who regards
the guidelines from the Plain English Campaign as gospel. That
showed me many glaring errors in the diktats of this self-appointed
body.
The Plain English Campaign specify addresses should be written in
lowercase except for the postcode. The Royal Mail who actually
deliver the letters state both the postcode and post town should
be capitalised. I'd be tempted to follow their advice instead,
but not this employer. The result was that every letter sent out
from the organisation was incorrectly addressed...
Also, have a look at http://www.plainenglish.co.uk/alternative.pdf
This is a list of alternative words and phrases suggested by the
PEC. Some of them make you ask "Do I really need a substitute for
that?" Other times the proposed alternative simply doesn't fit the
bill. For example, replacing "according to our records" with "our
records show". Those don't have the same meaning. The first says
"This is what we have recorded (but it may not be right)" whereas
the latter says "This is what we have: it must be correct."
