Hi David,

The strong points of rar format are that it works well with large

So, what's the "advantage" over:
{zip,gzip} | split
Or, is this just another case of the Windows mentality of having
"everything" in one tool to avoid plumbing?
RAR has no real advantage over zip split, but for a long time the
WinZip GUI could decompress split archives but could not create them -
you had to use zip to create the archive - whereas WinRAR could do
both. So for command line phobics, WinRAR was a better choice.
Ah, OK. I actually didn't know that WinZIP could split archives.
Or, deal with split archives! I would just plumb Zip's output
through split(1) directly. And, conversely, cat(1) the parts
together before UNzipping them.
Just in case anyone thinks that WinZIP, like WinRAR, is a good choice of zipper program, don't forget that it is shareware - it is illegal to use it for anything other than evaluation unless you pay for it. If you think its features are worth the money, then that's great - buy a license. If you want a free program, use a free program (like 7zip).
