While poking around looking for suitable components, I stumbled

I am not suggesting you follow their approach but it gives you a
crude idea of what's involved. In particular, their home-made
emitter-detector resembles the sorts of commercial reflective
emitter-detector pairs available (though the commercial devices
are made without *wood*! :> )
