Taming the Tiger: Using Java 1.5
======================================================================
A talk by Benedict Heal, independent trainer and consultant
Thursday 26th February 2004, 7:00 pm
Room A002, Ellison Building, Ellison Place, (also accessible from
Northumberland Road), University of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne,
NE1 8ST. Here is a street map:

ABSTRACT
Java 1.5 (the Tiger release) introduces a number of new features of
varying importance, which will all influence the way we program.
Generic collections have received the most publicity, but the effect
of others will be just as far-reaching. The metadata facilities will
remove much of the burden from boilerplate code, providing inside the
language some of the code generating abilities offered by IDEs and
pre-processors. Neater for-loops save repetitive coding, while the
auto-boxing borrowed from C# removes much of the pain of using
primitive types in an OO language. I'll introduce all these features,
and explore some of the ways they can be used to make software more
robust, and life easier for developers.
SPEAKER
Benedict Heal is an independent trainer and consultant, specialising
in Java and precise software modelling techniques such as Catalysis.
He used to lecture in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and is
still a registered guide to the city.

About BCS NOOPS
======================================================================
BCS, the British Computer Society, is the United Kingdom's Chartered
Engineering Institution for Information Systems Engineering.
NOOPS is the northern chapter of SPA (formerly OOPS), the BCS
specialist group for advancing software practice. We hold talks on the
latest software technology topics, which we hope will help both
novices and experienced practitioners to improve their knowledge, and
provide a forum for swapping ideas.
If you feel that you could be a NOOPS Activist in any way - by giving
a talk, recruiting a speaker, helping with the organisation of events
or anything else, please contact me or any other committee member.
