Power and Protocols for your Pocket: What to do with a Mobile Phone
======================================================================
A talk by Charles Weir, Penrillian
Thursday 18th March 2004, 7:00 pm
Room A002, Ellison Building, Ellison Place, (also accessible from
Northumberland Road), University of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne,
NE1 8ST. Here is a street map:

ABSTRACT
This talk explores an exciting new area of software development -
mobile phones. The phone anyone can now buy for a few hundred pounds
has the power and screen resolution of, say, a 1985 PC. Yet it's much
better connected, via digital mobile phone connections, short range
radio, infra red and sound input and output. And, best of all, its
programmable: given the expertise, anyone can write software to extend
its capabilities.
This talk examines what such software writing involves. We will
discuss:
* What kinds of phone are available.
* The different operating systems and environments used.
* The communications protocols involved, and how they are accessed
from software.
* How development happens in practice.
Finally we'll explore a recent Penrillian project, porting existing
software to run in a mobile phone environment. We will look at the
development approach used, and explore some of the real-life problems
encountered and their solutions.
SPEAKER
Charles Weir is managing director of Penrillian, a software house
specialising in porting software to mobile devices based on Symbian
OS.
Charles has more than fifteen years' experience of leading edge
software development, as software engineer, consultant and MD. He is
co-author of the book "Small Memory Software", and has led many
courses and workshops on OO design and implementation. He was Symbian
technical lead for the Ericsson R380 communicator phone, and software
architect for the Psion Series 5 Web Browser.
He is enthusiastic about improving software design and process;
particularly using reverse engineering and eXtreme Programming.

About BCS NOOPS
======================================================================
BCS, the British Computer Society, is the United Kingdom's Chartered
Engineering Institution for Information Systems Engineering.
NOOPS is the northern chapter of SPA (formerly OOPS), the BCS
specialist group for advancing software practice. We hold talks on the
latest software technology topics, which we hope will help both
novices and experienced practitioners to improve their knowledge, and
provide a forum for swapping ideas.
If you feel that you could be a NOOPS Activist in any way - by giving
a talk, recruiting a speaker, helping with the organisation of events
or anything else, please contact me or any other committee member.
