I think I could paraphrase my point by saying that patterns are
recognized and utilized pervasively in the software industry but the
developers just don't fully realize that is what they are doing.
For example, the PathMATE tool is template-based at the code fragment
level for full code generation. The templates even have their own
formal definition language. That is clearly an application of design
patterns, but I am quite sure the original developers never thought of
it in those terms.
