Check out Sequence Diagram Editor.

It's not quite text-based, but it provides a simple way to generate
sequence diagrams quickly and easily. You use an input form interface to
enter the diagram elements (with auto-complete) and it takes care of
layout, formatting, and pagination. You can see the diagram as you build it.
