Hello!
Being the part of UML, sequence diagrams are used in modeling process.
However, it seems to me, that there may be another applications of
S.D.
Am I right?
What *other* applications do you forsee?
Or S.D. are entirely limited to be used inside UML?
Correction. SDs belong to the *domain* of UML and can be used for "non-
coding" tasks but being bound by it's rules and regulations!
Does anyone know about non-standard S.D. usage?
What according to you is "standard" usage? Is it only applying in Code/
analysis? A sequence/component diagrams, typically need not be a part
of a "software architecture" per se...it can be used to model a
process in an organization! Take an interview-application
process...All steps right from receipt of application to calling the
candidate can be very well modeled as a "workflow" using a SD. here
the "objects" will actually be the entities involved in the workflow!
The component diagram of this would give you a better picture as to
which entities interact with each other - less emphasis on the timing
sequence!
UML = Unified Modeling Language --> nothing in this definition says
that it can't be used for non-standard usage! (I am assuming that
standard usage = used for software construction)
UML can and is used outside the domain of "software architecture." Try
googling around for applications of UML and am quite sure you'll find
what you are looking for.
Hope this helps.
